Led By The Wisdom of the Body. Supported By The Wisdom of the Earth.

Hi love! I’m Misty Dawn, a mama, midwife, and herbalist who has lovingly refined this apothecary line for decades - calling upon these handcrafted recipes to support myself, my family, and 1,000s of others. As a woman, a mama, and a yaya, I’ve likely walked your path or supported someone who has.

Take a deep breath, I’ve got you.

Ancient wisdom. Modern practice.

Herbalism and midwifery are sacred, time-honored ways of life. When we weave them into our lives, we bring ancient wisdom into modern practice. Much of our purpose is simply remembering how to trust our beautifully intricate bodies.

Each item you see at Herb & Moon Apothecary draws on the power of plants to help you uncover your sovereign knowing and power.

Misty Dawn: Mama. Midwife. Herbalist.

I had my first homebirth in 1997 in Sisters, Oregon; as the sun rose over the Three Sisters Mountains and the sage fields glistened with morning dew, my first son Keelin Aiko arrived peacefully in the world into the arms of a midwife. It was at this moment that I knew midwifery was my calling.

Birthing at home left me feeling empowered and fearless - like I could do anything.

At the time, home birth seemed almost rebellious. I’d been traveling since I was 16 years old and living the “van life” in a VW bus before it was considered hip. During my travels, I learned that the world is kind and giving, that I don’t need much to be happy, and that living close to the land is a comfort. These are all lessons I’ve carried with me.

Home birth was certainly not the popular choice in those days, but I was blessed to be introduced to my midwife, Anita, while I was pregnant, and I trusted her to guide me on my path to motherhood. Anita was a mother of four, a homebirth midwife, and an herbalist. During our appointments, she would tell me stories of her youth in Oaxaca, Mexico, where she’d apprenticed alongside her aunties and abuelas.

Anita was one of the first women to show me that the Earth can provide all we need for ourselves and our babies. She taught me that birth is a sacred journey to be trusted and embraced - not feared.

Birth is a sacred journey.

Anita shared many of her recipes with me during our appointments, and with time she taught me to make salve, baby powder, and everything I needed to care for myself and my newborn in the tender postpartum days.

After this initiation into caring for myself and my baby with plants, I started herb school in 1998, shortly before giving birth to my daughter, Harmony Sunshine, at home in 1999. Harmony came into the world smiling. She now lives in Topanga Canyon, where she thrives as an artist and musician. She is an integral part of Herb & Moon, serving as our creative director and social media manager. Working alongside Harmony is a dream come true.

In 2001, I completed my clinical degree in herbalism. Almost immediately, I started training to be a midwife. I graduated with a master's in midwifery and have attended births since 2000. In a full-circle moment, I got to work with Anita Rojas in 2007.

My second daughter, Ily Judeah, was born at home in 2008 and always inspires me through her creativity and love for dance.

Shortly after Ily was born, I opened my midwifery practice. Two decades into this journey, I’ve been honored to witness nearly 1,000 births!

Herbalism and midwifery are part of my lineage – and yours.

I was deep along the paths of herbalism and midwifery when I learned that my great-grandmother, Nellie Hodge, was an herbalist and midwife. She wrote a book in the 1890s documenting the plants most helpful during pregnancy, many of which I use in my practice today! You’ll find red raspberry, chamomile, and red clover in my Belly Grow Round tea.

I imagine Nellie riding horseback in her bonnet, on her way to collect herbs or attend a birth with her leather doctor's bag in tow. It reminds me that herbalism and midwifery have served women hand-in-hand since the dawn of time. If you could go back far enough, you’d almost certainly find they’re part of your lineage too!
